Local opposition has mounted to the government’s tour of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) trophy around inhabited islands of the Maldives as the trophy travels around Noonu atoll.Islanders on Noonu atoll Miladhoo refused to accommodate the trophy, whilst residents of Lhohee and Kudafari also protested they would prefer government to provide “basic necessities”.
On Velidhoo, demonstrations against the tour culminated in violence last Thursday.
Residents of several islands have complained the tour is an unnecessary expense, though an official from the Ministry of Youth and Sports had previously said costs were “very low”.
