haveeruA group of around six men gang-raped a girl behind the Alimas Carnival stage on Sunday around 5:30pm, the Maldives Police Service has said.
The girl had been with her boyfriend near the changing room behind the stage when the group of men sexually assaulted her. The group gagged the boyfriend and tied up his hands and feet before they raped the girl, the Maldives Police Service said.
A Police official said it was believed that the girl and her boyfriend, both 18 years of age, had been smoking cigarettes behind the stage when the group had accosted them. The official further said that they had received information about the incident around 6:00pm and that the group of men had fled the area by the time the Police had arrived. However, one person believed to be connected to the incident had been arrested in the area, the official said.
The Maldives Police Service said that they had later arrested two other suspects in connection to the case and that investigations were proceeding. - HNS
