Sultan Park blast convict freed

Varahmath Ahmed of M.Radiumkoka, the immigration office who aided 2 of the key perpetrators of the Sultan Park bombing to flee Maldives, has been freed under a presidential pardon.

Varahmath Ahmed was included among 69 convicts who were pardoned by President Gayoom last Wednesday. Others include people convicted with terrorism, disobedience to order, theft and other misdemeanors.

Varahmath was sentenced to one year in jail on 21 st February this year for aiding 2 key perpetrators of the Sultan Park bombings , Abdul Latheef Ibrahim of Green Villa / L.Kalhaidhoo and Ali Shameem of Dhoores / Sh. Komandoo , to flee Maldives . Varahmath entered different passport numbers into the system to allow two men to pass through customs despite being blacklisted.

The 2 men who escaped are still at large and are on the wanted list of Maldives Police Services. Further Interpol has issued Red Notice for their arrests. The 2 key perpetrators, Abdul latheef and Shameem fled Maldives on 17 th and 22 nd of September last year respectively.

The 69 inmates freed under presidential decree last Wednesday include 9 sentenced to Jail, 22 sentenced to banishment, 36 to house arrest and two to island arrest.

The Sultan Park blasts in September last year injured 12 tourists including a British couple on honeymoon.
