Police refused to comment on the grounds for discharging the suspects from police custody, saying the action was taken following a court order issued by Chief Justice Sheikh Mohamed Rasheed Ibrahim.
State attorney Hussein Shameem called the court order “ridiculous” and a “poor decision”, noting that those guilty of physical assault or who are a “potential peril to the community” may be kept in detention until a court verdict.
The grounds for the suspects' release have not been made public, with both police and the attorney general's office saying they do not have the information.
