The family of Ali Ishar, 21, the victim of a December gang-related murder, have spoken out against the transfer of prime suspects in the killing to house arrest on Thursday.Police refused to comment on the grounds for discharging the suspects from police custody, saying the action was taken following a court order issued by Chief Justice Sheikh Mohamed Rasheed Ibrahim.
State attorney Hussein Shameem called the court order “ridiculous” and a “poor decision”, noting that those guilty of physical assault or who are a “potential peril to the community” may be kept in detention until a court verdict.
The grounds for the suspects' release have not been made public, with both police and the attorney general's office saying they do not have the information.
