
At least three prisoners at the police-run Dhoonidhoo detention centre were taken to Hulhumalé hospital for treatment last week whilst holding a hunger strike over conditions, with some receiving intravenous (IV) fluids, it has emerged.Speaking to Minivan News, the director general of the hospital said detainees are treated there “once in a while” and police do not disclose their names to the hospital administration. He would not confirm or deny that prisoners were treated this week.Families allege a police cover-up after they were not informed of the move and have been offered no explanation by authorities, despite complaints to both police and the human rights commission.Around twenty inmates refused food for six days, according to one inmate, who says guards have “beaten him very hard” and confiscated items sent in by family . more
