Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services (DPRS) have revealed that inmates of Unit 2 of Maafushi Jail have refused to eat food cooked by the jail facility. Penitentiary Department reports that inmates of Unit 2 of Maafushi Jail have stated that they will take in any food from cooked by the jail facility from last Thursday. In this regard Penitentiary Department informed that out of the 306 inmates of Unit 2, 184 did not take in any food cooked by the jail since last Thursday night and that the number increased to 253 since Friday morning. However the number reduced to 243 by noon. Department of Penitentiary reveals that although no solid foods are consumed the inmates are taking in light snacks which have been supplied to them by their families and items previously stored in the cells. DPRS further informs that inmates have not caused any disturbances or caused any violence with regard to this action and has made any demands either. According to a inmate of Unit 2 the complaint of all the inmates are the lack of standard procedure where by all inmates can be treated equally and assigning a small cell for 4 inmates. He said forcing 4 inmates to share a single cell designed for 2 and keeping inside for prolonged periods are violation human rights. DPRS informs that no jail facility in the world would treat all inmates on an equal basis. DPRS further informed although various rehabilitation programs have been held for inmates of other units, no such programs have been carried out for the inmates of unit 2 but that it will soon be done. DPRS said all inmates are allowed out side as per a predetermined schedule and that no officer of DPRS under any circumstance would torture and inflict pain on any inmate. In situations where the inmate is found to disobey repeated orders action will be taken against the inmate as determined in guidelines followed by the Penitentiary. Occasional hunger strikes in the past have been staged by the inmates of Maafushi Jail. Last in June a hunger strike was staged but the most recent one was staged in last February when some inmates refused food for 48 hours.
