Three more injured in gang violence string

MALE, May 30, 2010 (HNS) – Three people have been injured in a series of gang violence within 18 hours in the capital Male, Police have confirmed.

Violence erupted simultaneously near Athama Palace in Galolhu ward and outside Maafannu Stadium injuring two Saturday evening and a third man was stabbed near Sinamale flat area just outside Galolhu police station hours later on Sunday afternoon.

“The man injured in the Sunday afternoon incident is being treated. Details are unclear, but he suffered serious injuries,” a police media official said.

“The other two were also severely injured.”

The official did not reveal the nature of the injuries and Haveeru was unable to get a comment from Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) where they are undergoing treatment.

Police confirmed the three incidents were linked and involved the same gangs.

The latest string follows a gang stabbing of a man at Alimas Carnival Friday evening leaving him with a ruptured spinal nerve and injuries to the foot according to IGMH.

In another stabbing Friday evening, a 14-year-old student, reportedly mistaken by a gang for someone else, was stabbed at eight areas of his body.

Meanwhile 40 people including minors were arrested Saturday evening for alleged involvement in the violence.

An official said most of the suspects were apprehended after police were tipped off about more encounters.

Arrests could not prevent gang violence without imposing severe legal punishment on the perpetrators, police noted.
