British honeymoon couple died in Maldives buggy crash

A young British couple were killed on their honeymoon in Maldives after hitting their buggy in to a tree.Jonathan and Emma Gray, both 25, were being driven back to their villa at the Kuredu Island Resort when they were involved in the accident in the early hours of Saturday morning. The couple, who had a six month old son, married on July 30 and were on the second day of their honeymoon. They were travelling in a four-wheeled buggy, similar to a quad bike, which is used to ferry guests around the island.

Spokesman Ahmed Shiyam said: 'We have a full team of officers investigating the tragic deaths of this couple. What we know so far is that they were being driven back to their room at around 4am on Saturday when their quad vehicle was involved in an accident.

'It appears that their vehicle crashed into a tree and they suffered fatal injuries. The driver of the quad bike was also seriously injured and is being treated at hospital.'

Mr Shiyam added: 'The driver suffered a range of injuries and was rushed to hospital. We are unable to comment in detail on his condition, but I beleive that he is now stable and conscious.

'We do not believe that he is now in any grave danger.'

Officials have been unable to indicate the nationality of the injured man but said he was not from the UK or the Maldives.

It is believed he was a long-term guest at the hotel and was believed to be in a relationship with a staff member.

At this stage it is unclear exactly why he was driving the couple of the vehicle and what caused them to crash. We have a team of officers working hard on the matter and hope to be able to give a clearer picture of what happened in the coming days,' said Mr Shiyam.

'At this stage all causes of action remain open to us and we cannot rule out criminal proceedings in the future.'

Specialist detectives from the Maldives' capital Male, which lies 80 miles to the south of the resort, yesterday travelled to Kuredu to probe the tragedy.

Kuredu is one of the largest resorts in the Maldives, big enough to include a golf course and golf buggys are used for getting around the island.

The resort lies in the country's Lhaviyani atoll and offers luxury accommodation in sea bungalows and secluded villas.

Officials said they would work alongside hotel staff to establish the cause of the fatal smash.

Meanwhile the Foreign Office today confirmed it was providing consular assistance following the tragedy.

A spokesman said: 'We are aware of the deaths of two British Nationals in Kuredu Island Resort and Spa, Maldives on 6 August 2011.

'Our thoughts are with the families at this sad time. We are providing consular assistance and liaising with both the police and the local authorities.'

The Indian Ocean Maldives archipelago is a consistently popular honeymoon destination for thousands of Britons.

The remote country is made up of more than 1,100 islands in 26 atolls.

Many of the 200 inhabited islands have been turned into luxury resorts, offering five star relaxation for foreign guests.

Kuredu Island Resort and Spa is in the Lhaviyani Atoll, north of the Male island group.

It's sad to hear I was there and actually leaving on the morning of the 6th aug at 7am, from the O resort, there are no quad bike/ types of vehicles to hire i only saw 1 quad bike, and it was a quad bike not abuthing else, and there was only 1 taxi which I went in it did 5mph max and closed at 11pm, my heart gies out to their families and child, there is something not right about the story I was there for 2 weeks and know how this island operated and on the morning of the 6aug eveything seemed normal and all staff were normal, I personally think the guy who drove the quad was drunk and all 3 were on the quad which is silly it was barely big enough for 2, the beach type roads have so many trees in the way speeding and negligence caused this tradegy, may they rest in peace
