The state attorneys working in the Attorney General’s office did not go to work today despite being aware that it would bring the operation of AG office to a standstill. The reason for their decision is that in spite of expressing their dissatisfaction over pay and the death threats they continue to receive nothing has been done to address their concerns according to the lawyers.
The concerns raised by the lawyers while talking included harassment they face when they represent state in high profile drug cases, lack of appreciation by the government for their work, lack of sufficient number of lawyers in AG office at a time their work has substantially increased in addition to the many death threats they receive.
The lawyers believe that the reason for inadequate staff force in AG office is the low pay. They have also raised their concerns over pay to the Civil Service Commission which according to the lawyers is not in a position to help although they had promised an allowance for the lawyers which is yet to materialize.
According to information we have there are 18 lawyers in the AG office who represent state in courts.
The lawyers plan to continue the strike and stay at home tomorrow as well and when asked when they will be back at work the lawyers did not specify a date. They are aware that at least 4 government institutions will go to a standstill because of their action but insisted the purpose of the strike was far from making the government suffer but to make it consider and appreciate their hard work.
