Fifteen-year-old Shifau Ismail died from heart failure in the early hours of Saturday morning, a week after being severely beaten with metal bars and sticks in a gang-related attack.
Family and friends gathered at Malé’s Aa Sahara cemetery, in the Machangoalhi area, to pay their last respects to Shifau. Youth minister Waheed Deen and human rights commissioner Ahmed Saleem also attended, and both condemned the failure of law enforcement to put a stop to Malé’s ongoing street violence.
Police say they have now arrested three in connection with the attack, which saw a second youth injured, also on 5 April. But Shifau’s family say they have not been informed of any arrests.
And friends at the cemetery expressed concerns further attacks would follow his death, though his family have already called for calm on the streets of the capital.
